This is an improved selection with particularly large bulbils for the species. It is the same strain used in the Experimental Farm Networks community-supported yield trial. If you are interested in participating in the research there is a possibility of receiving this material from EFN for free.

Dioscorea polystachya is a vining perennial vegetable with edible tubers and bulbils aka 'yam berries'.

5 bulbils are in each 'seed' pack.  Every bulbil received will not necessarily be their maximum size.  Growing from bulbils creates clones, so even a smaller-sized bulbil will have the same genetics from this improved selection.

Product Overview

*I'm getting down to the last of my stock. The bulbils I'm shipping are smaller than their maximum size, but I'm including extras in each order. They are all clones, so they include the same great genetics.

LATIN: Dioscorea polystachya aka Dioscorea opposita aka Dioscorea batatas

ZONE HARDINESS: 4-11

PLANTING: Store bulbils at room temperature until ready for planting. Plant in spring as you would a seed, in pots or directly into the ground.  Unlike a seed, they are clones, producing genetically identical plants. Provide a trellis.

HARVESTING: Grow up a trellis such as an arched cattle panel. Once ripe, place a tarp on the ground and shake the trellis, thereby raining bulbils for easy collection.

EDIBILITY: Bulbils can be cooked as bite-sized potatoes. They taste good, and once established can have prolific harvests. In chinese medicine the tubers are a longevity tonic named Shan Yao.
