In 2025 I did a trial of naranjilla (Solanum quitoense) and two related species, Solanum pseudolulo and Solanum vestissimum. One of the goals was to find tropical perennial species that could be grown in the temperate climate as an annual. Solanum pseudolulo performed best in this early trial. It was the most precocious, making ripe fruit 9-10 months after planting the seed. It was by far the most vigorous, keeping pace with figs and castor. The flavor was sweet and reminds me of a kiwi. The hairs are mildly irritating and can be easily scratched off the fruit.
Solanum pseudolulo is a wild and weedy species related to the cultivated Lulo (Solanum quitoense). I see tremendous hybridization potential between related species, then selecting for even more precocious seedlings.
