apple grafting

APPLE    PEAR    PERSIMMON    HONEY LOCUST    JUJUBE    CHE

DIFFICULTY: easy

TIMING: Graft when leaves are just starting to emerge in early spring.

TECHNIQUE: Anything that will give decent cambian contact.  Whip and tongue graft when scion matches the diameter of rootstock.  Bark graft when rootstock is much larger than scion material.  Many methods will work, this is my strategy.

ROOTSTOCK: I only use free standing rootstocks.  Dwarfing roostocks create dwarfing root systems and trees addicted to humans for staking and irrigation.  With standard and semi-standard sized trees pruning is the primary control of size. Fireblight resistant stock is vital for hot humid climates.

Bud118 - Semi standard 95%, clonal, red wood helps indicate if a branch is from scion or stock

Malling 111 - Semi standard 85%, clonal, plant to graft line to prevent bur knots

Antonovka - Full sized tree aka standard, seedling
