Seeds are collected from an assortment of improved cultivars grown on grafted trees at our farm in southern IL. Cultivars include: Dollywood, Szuki, DEC Goliath, D.T. Middle, NTN Buzz Fave, among others.
Seeds from cultivars are known to make better rootstock than seeds from wild trees. One reason is that they are more genetically diverse through crossing with geographically distant parents. These seeds will make both male and female trees. For the best chance of obtaining quality fruit, grafting is best, but if not grafting, improved seed is essential. Even if grafted, a branch of the rootstock can be left to grow for the chance of discovering a new cultivar.
Seeds have been cleaned and are under moist-cold stratification in a fridge. They will arrive moist in a plastic bag. Keep in a fridge until ready to plant. There will be no medium in the bag. This allows the seeds to be clearly seen and easily inspected. Occasionally, check on the seeds, add or remove moisture as needed, and inspect and remove any molding seeds.
